Right To Life

Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guarantees the Right to Life and Personal Liberty to every citizen of this country. This means every legal person is entitled to this right. The Article states that “No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to a procedure established by law.”

The Right to Life includes the Right to Live with Dignity. Women, like men, as citizens of free India have the right to live a life with dignity, free of violence and abuse. The Supreme Court expanded the interpretation to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution in Maneka Gandhi vs Union of India case where it held that the right to live is not merely a physical right but includes within its ambit the right to live with human dignity.

The Woman Survivor believes it is the right of every woman to live a life of her choice - get the education she wants, have the freedom to make a decision to marry an individual of her choice or not marry at all, secure herself in an abusive situation even if the abuser is her own father, brother or husband. She should be able to exercise the Right to Life and with dignity.
